WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — President Donald Trump revealed Sunday that the United States “may be having some discussions” with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, signaling a potential diplomatic approach amid a growing U.S. military presence near Venezuela.
Trump did not provide details about the possible talks but emphasized that “Venezuela would like to talk.”
The U.S. has been actively conducting operations against vessels suspected of drug trafficking in the region. The recent arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier, along with additional warships, marks a significant escalation. While the administration describes these maneuvers as part of a counter-narcotics campaign, experts see it as a pressure tactic on Maduro.
When asked to clarify his statement regarding Maduro, Trump said: “What does it mean? You tell me, I don’t know.” He added: “I’ll talk to anybody. We’ll see what happens.”
Venezuelan authorities have not yet responded to requests for comment. President Maduro, who faces narcoterrorism charges in the United States, has accused Washington of “fabricating” a war against his government.
